Marathon Report

Huge crowd - Awesome dancing ....

Thursday ........

My Dances Of The Day : Isolated & Halo

In my workshop room the event kicked off with Nigel – A good crowd tackling MaggieG’s advanced Redcoat Tiger - Classic MaggieG Irish & Nigel did a great job getting things going – Some mega tricky timing  – Tough but cool & they enjoyed it for sure ………. He could not get the Americans to do the Brit salute though !! J ……. In the next room I know Dee had a good time with AS&S’s In Control & Craig’s lovely new night club I Promise You ...............

The it was great to meet Holland’s Daniel Trepat – A nice, good instructor & great fun - Daniel taught a couple of dances – A cool Easy-Intermediate country two step called Heaven In My Women’s Eyes & Brazilla, an Easy-Intermediate dance to Frank Trace’s Brazil music – Daniel’s phrased with a little easy tag to hit the beat

At the same time as Daniel the room next to me was full with Christopher Petre – A hit teach of one of my own current favourites M.T.Groove’s Notorious Cha (M.T. Michelle’s baby is due 2nd June – All the best to one of my very best friends), an awesome funky cha cha to a remake of the classic Sting track – And in another room Lou Ann also had a crowd doing Debbie’s lovely night club Isolated, another big hit just now back in the UK with the Newline gang

Rob’s Mojo Rhythm is already a hit dance both sides of the pond, but still a full house with Maurice for this one for those catching up with the latest No.1 on Carol’s World Newsletter weekly survey (Although the dance-floor would be shouting Poker Face here at least) – After that it was back to Nigel for me, with a teach of one of Neville & Julie’s latest who are not here this year – Halo was the dance, a cool turny/funky night club that looks like another hit for Neville & Julie (Awesome track that reminds me of the dances I did with Shaz – Searchin’ & So Deep) – Another trick teach for Nigel done really well – Earlier too Mona taught Neville & Julie’s Sensless Cha, another hit dance/teach for sure

Last but not least whilst I had fun teaching Kate’s Under A Spell & Number One, I’m sure folk were also enjoying Kim’s lovely night club Whiter Than White taught by Johnny Two-Step & Dan Albro was also revived his awesome hit dance Syncopated Love in another room

As well as these there were also some other new dances being taught which I did not see as I was in the same room all afternoon, just one of 4 workshop rooms on the go – I’ll report back on anything that looks like it’s a hit as it comes up …………………. In social dancing on the evening we had a great night – Just a few highlights included the stand-out Poker Face – And also Craig’s new one I Promise You – And night clubs certainly ruled with full floors for the likes of Niels’s I Held Your Hand, Dee’s Footprints, Kim’s Whiter Than White, Neville & Julie’s Halo – And the wow one for me, Debbie’s Isolated – The floor was especially packed for that one & great to see Debbie here to dance it with everyone

Friday ........

My Dances Of The Day : Coochie Bang Bang & Beautiful

Too many to pick from already !! J ………….. I was DJ all day in one of the 5 workshop rooms on the go all day 10.00am-7.00pm so I did not see it all by a long way - 9 x 5 = Lots of dances of all levels & all sorts by an awesome list of choreographers – Something for everyone for sure - But for my review I can jump ahead to my evening DJ spot in the second evening room, where as well as social dancing from 7.00pm-3.00am we did lots of request recaps during the evening, a good sign of hit teaches/dances ……

The biggest workshop of the day was Scott with a great new swing dance called Coochie Bang Bang – This one must have broke the all-time record with way over 200 in the room & more ‘locked-out’ !! – And it was the same in the evening, where for a while Louie must have been quiet in the main ballroom with everyone crammed in to see Scott’s recap – So this one the dance of the day for sure (The same applies today for his other new one Food Chain which I’ve not seen yet) ……….. Shaz also did well with her new one Beautiful, with way over 100 in her workshop & again a full room for the recap in the evening – A great new dance – Classic funky Shaz – Insomnia was a popular floor filler ……… Late in the evening Shaz’s The Climb was also a popular new night club recap

Next up Dee’s lovely night club Hush Hush was really popular – As well as a recap I played that one a couple of times over the evening by request – Already one of my own favourites it’s no secret !! J (Thursdays nigh clubs still hot too – Halo/Whiter Than White/Isolated/Addicted) …. Lot’s still remembered Dee’s hit teaches from last year, Fade-Away & Footprints which were much requested, as was one of her more recent hits Spotlight, a really popular one – Dee had a big crowd for new one Maybe this morning – I hope it went well, I love it – We’ll see tonight !!??

Another recap that filled the room was Guyton’s new one Hey Hey Goodbye – Classic Guyton ……. In The A was a popular one too, already a hit with many – Tame in comparison !! J, but another equally cool funky west coast one was Zac’s Giv Ya Sum – Looked really neat this one – Zac also taught a cute beginner Sweet Tooth which I’ll take back home too

Niels is doing great here too in his first Marathon year – His workshop room was full for his new waltz My First Moment, which also had an equally big crowd for review in the evening – I’ve heard reports of a full workshop for his new one Cuban Kiss – Watch out for this one ……………….. We’ve got Cato here too & both his teaches were much requested – Cool & different – Check these out ….. I Won’t Cry & Fairytale …. I’m writing this from the DJ booth watching Cato teach a lovely waltz called Hold On, something for my Saturday review ………… Another ‘Euro’ going down really well is Holland’s Daniel Trepat – He had a great crowd for the last workshop of the day with me & we had a ball with the dance Respect – He’s a great entertainer & had the room high energy & smiling – Not bad at 6.30pm after a long day !! J Dan is doing a good job here too – First off with So Persuasive which we danced a few times ……. Looking forward to his new one With Your Love, which I’ve heard was a hit teach today (Saturday)

Jill & Junior’s latest How Do You Sleep attracted a big recap crowd – Bouncy, beaty feel-good stuff – Likewise Steve’s Here’s Looking At You Kid – A lovely Improver which was mega popular & on my teach list for back home – Same goes for Frank Trace’s Sag, Drag & Fall ………….. Last but not least we had John Robinson with us & he did a quick recap of his Thursday teach, MaggieG’ s Life Without U – Great stuff, especially the way John does it !!! J

Dances I liked in social dancing that I’ve added to my own teach list too include Rachael’s lovely country one Toes ………. Saw her night club Jesse James for the first time too – That’s going to be popular …… Rona danced her funky/cool new one Old Skool which looked real neat too & got a big cheer

A few of the more popular social dances other than I’ve already mentioned include Make My Day, J Ho (Split floor), Sting Me (Pam here to dance that with us), Baby Believe ………….. As well as all the obvious ones like Amame, Poker Face, Guantanamera, Tango Cha, Moonlight Kiss etc. etc…… Carol’s Newsletter survey is spot on as usual.

Saturday ........

My Dances Of The Day : Cuban Kiss & Food Chain

Ease On Down won the Pro-Choreographer competition - Shaz took 2nd place with Beautiful & Junior’s Invisible was 3rd – All three not coincidentally popular dances over the weekend too.

Loads learning/dancing Rona’s.funky Old Skool – Not on the schedule but many got to learn it somehow & it was going a storm Saturday & Sunday morning – Great track/dance to check out – Likewise Jo’s Bad Influence which won one of the choreography competition categories, another neat funky one – Also Rachael’s night club Jesse James from the cruise ……. The corridor teach champions of the event maybe these three – All very popular by Sunday morning !! J

It was a great non-stop weekend – We are back in Tucson now with Dee & Shaz having some fun time before our mini-workshop here before flying home -------------- Watch out for the Marathon next year 27th-30th May 2010 – Times are bad & tight just now financially for us all both sides of the pond & most everywhere else too, but this event got even bigger & better in 2009, which is a credit to the great organisation of the Directors/Staff & the quality of an awesome choreographer/Instructor line-up – So get it on your schedule for 2010 if you can - Looking forward to Tampa next in November - Cya there if not before

Boston 2009

I started off the weekend taking HIT THE LIGHTS by Francine Sittrop, taught by Dancin' Dean.  This is a fun, lively little dance and I really liked it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD-YRjMgavw

I really liked PRYAMIDS OF SAND by Amy Spencer and the boys.  It's a very smooth dance and got a lot of attention for this talented, relatively new line dance choreographer.  I didn't get a chance to take her class this year but she's an EXCELLENT teacher so if you ever see her teaching anywhere, take a class.   I don't have the video or sheet but I'm sure we'll get it.  If you haven't had her teaching at your event, you should consider it.  Her classes are always large and excellent.

There were some good technique classes this year.   What a treat to have such wonderful dancers share some of their knowledge!!
Brian B taught CHA CHA TECHNIQUE AND SPINS AND TURNS .  He does such a great job of breaking down difficult body moves.
Lee Easton taught HOW TO WORK YOUR BODY.
Rob Glover taught HIP-HOP/FUNKY/B-BOY
All of these classes were well attended which I think says a lot about line dancers wanting to learn better technique.  I hope this will be a trend at events because we have some people that are just excellent at teaching these technique classes.

Scott's Dance BROKEN GLASS was filled to the max and for good reason.  This is another really great dance by Scott and wasn't THAT difficult.  I know it will feel great once I get it mastered.   It was one of my favorites of the weekend.  The step sheet is on our site under
http://www.worldlinedancenewsletter.com/newdances.html

Guyton's ANGELS ON THE MOON was a favorite of many people I talked with.  I am taking this class at the next opportunity.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS_leRJLjmc

A lot of people already knew IN THE A, a really funky new one of his.  I enjoy watching these but don't usually try them.  It WILL be done at the events though and a lot of people either knew it or leaned it this weekend.  I watched Guyton teach this dance and it's pretty amazing how much he got through in a short amount of time and made it look pretty easy.  Actually the footwork for this dance and the arms aren't difficult.  I think this one is do-able for most people.

John Robinson taught a nice dance called  O.   I didn't take the class when he reviewed it Sunday morning but I sat through the class and watched and I liked it a lot.  I'll post the video as soon as I get one.

Ginger Kozlawski http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlxq65B_cMw
and Amy Christian-Sohn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlxq65B_cMw
both had dances to the music from Slumdog and both of them are good dances -- Amy's is easier and captures the flavor of the movie and music and looks great on the floor and Ginger's is a little more difficult and also captures the flavor.  It was pretty much an equal split floor for the two of them.  Some of the UK dancers were doing Maggie's dance so I guess you have a lot of pick from for this music.

I took Steve Lescarbeau's class for HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID.  What a cute dance this is.  I had seen the video before I went to Boston and liked it.  I love the music and it is interesting enough that I think Steve is going to do very well with this dance.  Any age or level would enjoy doing it so check it out.   This is a very smooth, dreamy-feeling little cha.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHZSrKveku0

I got lots of good feedback on INVISIBLE by Junior Willis and I WILL take this class in North Carolina if I haven't learned it before.   I've been hearing about this dance since it first came out a little while ago.  Beautiful music.

Jennifer Cameron taught ALL SUMMER LONG by Daniel Trepat and Pim Van Grootel.  I know many of you don't know that Jennifer is not only a great event director, she's a wonderful teacher and was a dance competitor for years.  She had GREAT teams and I'm always bugging her to get another team together because I miss team competition.  I wish a lot of you would do that.  She had a really good turnout for this class.  I would like to see her teaching at more events!!  It was good to see people other than the few of us who had been doing this dance on the floor.  It really is a good dance and I don't get tired of doing it.  I think Daniel is teaching this at the Marathon and even if you don't want to learn the dance, you'll love watching him teach it.  He's so CUTE!!!!!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKdWLONEfFg

BLOW YOUR MIND by Paul McAdam was my favorite of the ones he taught.  Love the music!!  http://www.yipee.sg/video.asp?unique_id=13875&video=choreo_demo_video

FEEL filled the floor and was taught again at this event.  I wanted to take the class again but there were two things at once that I wanted to do and someone is teaching it in our class.  I love the music for this dance as well as the dance.

STING ME by Pamela Leader and Ray Crum is one of those dances that, every time I heard it played, I asked "What dance is that?"  It's another one that filled the floor and has been done in California for quite some time.  It's definitely one you should look at.   I know I'm learning it before the next event.

Scott has been teaching Jo's Dance, WHY DID YOU LIE?  I really liked this one.   It would appeal to all classes and high beginner/int classes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPqUnMHgy4c (teach)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiL2uQ72Nzk&feature=related (demo)

I took Neville's class NO NEED TO RUSH.  It was requested a lot and I liked this one.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNKNUFTXR0g

I wanted to take ALIVE by Neville but my brain wasn't after taking four classes in a row on Saturday.    http://www.yipee.sg/video.asp?unique_id=13900

Paul taught BLOW YOUR MIND.   Cool dance to cool music, which I enjoyed learning but then wasn't too good at dancing it when we danced it later.  I'll have to work on this one.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewNlWHdkPy8

I retook the lesson on I SPY.  Love the music and dance for this one and it's very do-able.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7chRQPi4XI

I also liked GET INVOLVED by Paul McAdam.  Can you say FAST!!  http://www.yipee.sg/video.asp?unique_id=13876&video=choreo_demo_video

Dancin' Dean taught Paul's Dance EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU.  Another of Paul's that we have been doing in Tampa and it's a really good dance.  Nigel had taught this in our class and we've been doing it for awhile.

SHATTERED by Tom Clemons was a popular class.  Maurice had taught this one in Tampa and it's always popular here in Tampa.  Love the music for this one, too.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7W5crzG4j_c

Johanna Barnes brought back NAUGHTY.  If you didn't learn this one the first time around, you should give it a look now.  It's just a fun, sexy dance to do.  I couldn't find a video for this one but Johanna needs to do one so you can see it.

Amy Spencer brought back SKIPPIN.  I love the little wavy arm movement in this dance and it's really do-able for everyone.  It's not fast and it's not difficult but just fits the music perfectly.  Like I said, Amy is a choreographer to watch.  Her classes are large and people pay attention to what she is bringing to events.   She's a person who brings something new and fresh to line dancing but does it in a way that appeal to the young people as well as the people who might not want to do some of the funkier dances.  She makes the funky painless and it just makes anyone doing her dances look good.  If you want to REALLY be funky you can and if you just want to enjoy the dance and incorporate the arm movements the way she does, you look good doing it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYo6dEoBuXc

DEAR LIFE, Guyton Mundy.  I really enjoyed learning this dance to beautiful music.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9KNlYwQEDo.  One of my favs of the weekend.

ROB GLOVER taught Hip/Hop/Funky/B-Boys Technique.   He incorporated his technique in the SHOWDOWN so well that he and his business partner WON!!  What a great routine performed to perfection!!  I truly enjoyed it.

FEEL by Scott Blevins.  This one has been out for awhile but it absolutely fills the floor and I think people keep taking the class just because they want to keep doing the dance.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4283iGJxaH8
NOTICE THE DANGER by Guyton Mundy.  Everyone jumps on the floor when this one is played.   It always makes me happy to see how creative Guyton can be and this is a perfect example of taking a contra dance and bringing a whole new slant to it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=N2obmO2enAc

SOME THAT WERE DONE BUT NOT TAUGHT:

Louie played a really good mix of old and new dances and kept the floor filled.  I loved being able to dance one of my old favorites with Dan McInerney, JUST GET SAVED.  Not to mention the fact that Dan is an undiscovered treasure here in the U.S.  He's a great choreographer and one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.  I hope you will take a moment to meet him at the next event he's at.  I don't think he has been invited to teach here but he should be on your lists of potential instructors.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=NwWAQMzhl1Q
I LOVED the new dance, ISOLATED, by Debbie McLaughlin - adv.  Although it wasn't taught in Boston, Debbie was nice enough to teach it to a few of us and what a beautiful dance.  She might enter it in the choreography competition at the Marathon so be sure and take a look at it.  There's a neat little turn in it that just looks so great when everyone is doing it together, plus she's a great dancer and makes every dance look fabulous.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avG8rEOGQzI
POKER FACE by Craig Bennett is one I've been hearing about and filled the floor.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIJ48i4aisg
ADDICTED, by Rachael M.  I REALLY want to learn this dance.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcISlPYNtPw

Eastern's 2009

Attended Eastern's for 4th year in a row and had a great time!  Only went for the day on Saturday but learned 2 new awesome dances; one from Scott Blevins and the other from Guyton Munday,  both these dances will be debuted @ The JG Marathon.  Scott's new dance has multiple turns (wouldn't be a Scott dance without them)and is A, B + 1 tag while Guyton's is a phrased dance to island type music from Pitbull.  Love the music for both these dances, make sure you check them out at The JG Marathon!

Zac Detweiler taught his dance "Give U Sum" which is a cool funky dance.  Missed this teach but hopefully will pick this dance up elsewhere.   Also taught by Zac was his dance "Swing-N-Cha" which is one of my favorite dances from Zac & Patrick Fleming.   Learned this dance  @ home before World's and so glad he brought this dance to the area.   I took a review of Guyton's "Dear Life", no tags or restarts; I really like this dance .  I did miss Guyton's "Angels on the Moon" and some of my co-dancers really loved this dance, this may be on my list to learn!    Rainy Dae taught "Angie" which is still a favorite of mine, in addition to Gail Smith teaching "Romeo & Juliet" on Saturday which seems to be popular in this area.  Gail also taught a favorite of mine on Sunday, "Still Waiting" by Robbie McGowan Hickie.  "Still Waiting" has two song choices, I prefer the pop alternative; Wait by Stacie Orrico.

Had a great time Saturday night in open dance!   3 of us stayed up until after 1:00 a.m. when Guyton taught "Notice The Danger" to a full floor of swing dancers who continued to trickle into the line dance room including John Lindo who was a riot.  I must say it was an interesting teach and loads of fun !!!  Took about 1 hour to teach and then practicing it contra.   Guyton decided to take his dance down to the lobby on the swing dance floor, finally the line dancers invading the swing dancers floor!   Well, what could they say there was more swing dancers doing "Notice The Danger", we line dancers were definitely outnumbered!  Louie put the music on and onto the floor we went, line & swing dances combined.   Well, it turned out to be a lot of fun and I am sure that the swing dancers' co-dancers were amazed at what they had been working on!

I want to thank Barry Durand for including line dancing at this event again and for the the late night snack that was provided Saturday night. That was a treat!  It also gave us the opportunity to spend time catching up with dancers that we haven't seen in months from Virginia to Florida!!!   It is always fun to get with the gang from Virginia because they always take me to "Margaritaville".  Thank you Raymond for making it possible for Guyton to teach his new dance late Saturday night since we missed the 7:30 teach.....1 of my favorites of the weekend!

Passed on my new teaches to my co-dancer last night in addition to picking up 2 new dances from her.  So, while I was away learning she was busy @ home doing her own little thing.    She taught me "Hush Hush" by Dee Musk which is a beautiful nightclub with 1 tag and "La Secret" by Robbie McGowan Hickie which some are comparing to the Trust Me" song.  This dance is phrased with 48 & 64 counts + tags, it is not hard as you can hear it in the music and the steps are easy!

My favorites are still Shaz's "Reach Out" & "Magic", Joey Warren's "It's Going Round Round", Francien's "A Miracle", Maggie's "Life Without You" and Andrew, Simon & Sheila's "In Control", plus Neville & Julie's "Somethin Crazy".

Marathon 2009

Well, the Marathon, once again, lived up to it's name. Over 120 DANCES TAUGHT!! That's why you can't do just one Marathon! The same people come every year BUT they bring everyone else with them and that's why it's been going on forever and I hope it goes on forever more. From the minute you arrive and catch the shuttle to the hotel, a short little trip with old and new friends always on board, until you walk in the door of the beautifully remodeled lobby to be greeted by everything to do with pirates and beautiful balloons and even the wonderful staff at the hotel, many who remember your name from year to year (truly amazing), you know you are at a party. I got there on Wednesday night, which I like to do every year because classes start in the early afternoon on Thursday and it's just more relaxing to stay up and chat with old friends and meet new ones and then get up and take it easy in the morning. There were quite a few people there on Wednesday night this year. There are no planned dance activities on Wednesday and that's on purpose. Jean says the event will turn into a year-long weekend if she keeps adding things. LOL. Not that we don't try to talk her into it. That's why this event is a must-attend event every year for those of us who love to go to events. As soon as you walk into the hotel, the registration desk and big, comfy lobby/bar area is RIGHT THERE so you see all your friends from the minute they arrive and all through the weekend. It's a great setup for a hotel. Even the restaurant is right there so you can hop in and have breakfast (under $10 for a full buffet and custom omelettes), lunch in the deli, and a buffet dinner ($12). Now those are GREAT hotel prices if you ask me and the food is really good. I think the same staff is there forever. They actually thank us for coming and are just so helpful and happy to have us there. There is always cold water everywhere and the lesson rooms are all conveniently located in one area of the hotel. The individual rooms are big and the sink area in the bathroom is nice for all our "stuff." It's just a perfect setup for a dance event. Of course this is The Marathon and some of the lesson rooms are crowded but the smart instructors, like Scott did in his class, told us to learn the dance and then he split the room to actually dance it at the end so that worked fine. After all, when you have this many people at an event and some classes are just packed because people want to take the lessons, you are going to be a little crowded. It kind of adds to the fun as far as I'm concerned and it has to make the instructors feel good to know how many people want to learn their dances. I know I would be thrilled!! The classrooms were decorated with balloons and adorned with big banners that Guyton Mundy painted. They were auctioned off on Saturday night along with the coveted puppet of the year (this year it looked just like Christopher Petre). Here is the list of instructors for this year ............

THE MARATHON is not just a name for an event, it IS a Marathon .........

There are lessons in five different rooms from morning until night, the instructors teaching all levels so that there is always something for everyone all day long. I liked the way that Pepper did the demos. She lined up all the instructors for each hour during the day and one by one they did their dance so you could see, not only what was being taught in that hour, but it turned into a fun little event. I know it was probably nervewracking for the choreographers but it was fun for us!! LOL. The choreographers awaiting their turn were doing background shoop-shoop dancing to the peppy music and just making it fun and it moved very quickly because it takes awhile to go through 120 DANCES!!! Thursday is different from the rest of the weekend because on Thursday the popular dances from other people are taught and for the rest of the weekend you MUST be a choreographer to even be invited to teach at the Marathon and the top people from everywhere are there with excellent dances. They always put a lot of effort into introducing their new "babies" and we are never let down with the quality of dances introduced at this event. Jean doesn't even put the schedule out in advance so that the new dances are truly new and people aren't learning them before they get there. This is another reason some of the classes are crowded. No one knows until we get there what dances are going to be "must learn" ones and that also adds to the excitement of this event. Some of the newer ones are still being taught from previous times but the brand new ones are truly fresh and being taught for one of the first times at this event. Once everyone sees what they want to take that day, they start the classes and when you get tired of taking classes (or your brain just won't do another one), you can go do open dancing or practice the things you learned with friends, or get a Starbucks Coffee in the lobby or have a snack or take a nap or have a drink or just collapse in a chair. LOL. Because everything is so centrally located, it's just a natural thing for everyone to mingle on the couches around the hotel or chat with the instructors and take the time to just meet new people. Pepper did a FABULOUS job all weekend as emcee. She has this infectious giggle and just is so relaxed and keeps everything moving and goes with the flow when music is being cued up by Louie (how does he do it?). Can you imagine how difficult it is to get the music for 120 DANCES in order and played for the demos? It truly amazes me that he pulls this off. He didn't even have to yell at anyone this year. He also was up all night almost every night playing music until the last person was finally ready to go to bed at 5 or 6 in the morning and then did it all over again the next day. All of the schedules are posted on the doors so you don't have to scrounge around looking for your schedule or finding where to go. I would always suggest you get the full pass for this event because many of the workshops are paid workshops and I find that I always want to take a bunch of the paid workshops.

After getting your registration packets the weekend really starts. Everything is organized with all the information you need for the weekend and of course, the Marathon staff are total pros at doing this so it's fast and painless. All the lessons started at 2 pm on Thursday. This day is reserved for people to teach popular dances that are not their own but are dances that are being done and popular around the world. We pretty much keep up with everything in Florida but I think I took a class EVERY SINGLE HOUR the first day so I knew that I would be totally mind boggled for the rest of the weekend as far as remembering dances. You can click on the schedule above to see what was taught Thursday and what was taught as the weekend progressed. At the end of the lessons on Thursday there is time to grab a bite to eat, change clothes and come down for the HUGE THURSDAY NIGHT PARTY. This is always my favorite night of the weekend because it's just the beginning and I know there will THREE MORE DAYS to go so everyone just dances on Thursday night and greets friends we've all met over the years and I love seeing the expressions on the faces of people who have never attended a big event like this before. They are AMAZED!!

After doing lessons all day, you run upstairs and change or go out to dinner via the free shuttle and you can even go to the mall during the daytime hours if you want to get away for awhile. The shuttle drivers will tell you all the places they will drop you off and for just a small tip, they are very accommodating. The lesson part of the event is repeated every day but at night is when the pirates got warmed up. There were two large ballrooms with open dancing. Just to give you an idea of the size of the floor Jeff and Lynn Bartholomew laid 8992 sq ft of floor and the hotel laid @ 1000 sq ft of floor, which gave the event 10,000 sq ft of floor. The main ballroom was 5,280 sq ft which was a "mile" of floor - WOW!

On Sunday, Marathon volunteers set a record (for the Bartholomews) by tearing down and loading all their floors back on the truck in 3-1/2 hours.

The DJs are just fabulous and everything you could imagine was played all night long. I thought the variety was really good all weekend. If you wanted to switch back and forth between ballrooms, they were close and you could just go dance in one and then come back to another. Louie St. George, Big Dave, DJ Jam, Big Sexy Joey, JP Potter, and Debi and Gale just kept things hopping all weekend. All the DJs really tried to play the dances that were taught and there were short reviews in Big Dave's room each night, which I liked. The choreographer would do a quick walk-through and then we would try to remember how to do the dance. I always want to do it "one more time!!" There were all levels of dances this year and Jean made sure there were plenty of dances that beginners could enjoy and that people could take back to their clubs, country or not. I talked to a lot of people who had come to their first event and/or first Marathon and they were having a blast. There are also step sheet books (in a real notebook) that you can order at the time you register and they are a tremendous help with just trying to remember the dances you learn all weekend.

The highlight of the weekend, of course, is the show and parade on Saturday night on the ONE MILE DANCE FLOOR!! Pepper and the puppet were bantering throughout as people were introduced and between acts. They were so funny. We were treated to TWO WORLD CHAMPION performances, one by Brian B. and another by Daniel Trepat. I remember the first time I saw line dancers that could move like these two and how in awe I was. I always wonder how other people feel the first time they get to see these amazing performers. Pepper and Johnny 2 Step did a cute little routine and there was a group performance by Jill Babinec, Cato Larsen, Nancy Morgan, Bracken Ellis Potter Frank Trace, Daniel Trepat (The Sparrow Cyclers) and another skit by and Big Dave Baycroft, Shaz Walton, Dee Musk, Dan McInerney, Rob Glover (The Houligans). We also had The Pirates of Dance. There are pictures online of most of the groups. After the show was open dancing until the stroke of MIDNIGHT and then the parade started. I always wonder how these people get through security with some of the elaborate costumes. I hope we get lots of good pictures because I could never put in words how good they were. There are some pictures on my site but I will try to get others to add so you can truly appreciate them. People just saved all their pirate shirts and hats and "stuff" to enjoy Saturday night and it is just a great, fun time.

We had the COOKIE PARTY and it was so much fun. I would like to tell you I made the cookies but NOT!! They were delicious and we had music and dancing and just socializing. It was so great to meet you all and thank you for coming to just enjoy such a wonderful group of teachers all in one room and thank you, Jean, for organizing it. Jean's adorable 4-year old granddaughter, Paige, handed out the 'Bootie Bag' filled with candy, tattoos, charms, ruler and more candy! You know I love cookies and instructors!!! There were some good seminars this year, too. Michele Burton and Michael Barr taught an instructors' workshop and Michael was kind enough to share some tips with us at the cookie party. Pepper Siquieros taught a free seminar about Security and Social Networking (what a great idea, Pepper). There was a welcoming party for staff and volunteers and to top it all off, on Sunday evening there is a pizza party near the pool. I left before that party but the people who stayed loved it. Now, I call this a MARATHON FUN WEEKEND. If you haven't been, you should go and if you have been I KNOW you will be back because we all come back. Jean and her staff did an amazing job of running this huge event and I just want to say thank you for a weekend I look forward to every single year.

I wrote this paragraph for last year's report but I will say it every year and I hope you will really think about it, not only for the Marathon, but for every event you attend, whether you have a perfect weekend or have a little problem here and there:

I hope the next time you go to this event or any other event you will take the time to write a review and to personally thank the directors and their staff for allowing us to have such a wonderful experience. I want you to remember that there is so much to do -- from negotiating with the hotel, hiring the instructors, worrying about getting enough people to pay the bills and knowing that if they don't come they are going to go in the hole, getting the instructors from the airport to the hotel, deciding on the decorations, laying the floors (which is a massive job), getting all the brochures done leading up to the event, organizing the vendor spaces, setting up all the sound systems, making sure the hotel staff is doing what they need to do for a dance event, planning the hospitality room for the instructors and volunteers, arranging for things like the Cookie Party and the welcoming reception, planning everything for an entire year, getting the registrations posted and confirmed, dealing with a million questions and doing the schedule, which is also not easy, as you can imagine, cleaning everything up afterwards and making sure that any problems or issues are dealt with during the event. Every time someone will come up to me and complain about some petty little problem they had during any weekend I just look at them and think DUH!!! I'd like to see you pull this off!! LOL. I remember the days when there were NO events to complain about. Fortunately I didn't have to say DUH to myself this weekend because no one was complaining about anything to me.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FROM ME

Thursday & Friday morning at the jg Line Dance Marathon

Well, we are having a great time. Yesterday I took REDCOAT TIGER, Maggie G., taught by Nigel. It was a cute date with some tricky timing in the music but everyone enjoyed it. I also took Lou Ann's Class for Isolated and she did a great job teaching this dance. I also took ADDICTED taught by Lou Ann. We stayed up kind of late to dance last night but wanted to rest for today so went to bed around 2 but tonight we'll make you proud. LOL.

This morning we watching the demos and OH MY GOODNESS!! There are sooooooo many good dances. I cannot possibly choose just a few so I'm going to be doing a little survey. So far, the hands-down winner from the people I asked who saw you demos as Scott's new Sing dance called COOCHIE BANG BANG but it is by no means the only good dance I saw today. There are enough good dances just for Friday lessons to keep everyone busy and happy for a year. Most of the dances are quite doable with a few advanced ones thrown in for good measure. Three of the "newbie" instructors to this event are Dan McInerney, Rob Glover, and Daniel Trepat and they are all big hits. You are just going to be so impressed with the dances coming out of this event. I'll put the note on for where to order the videos and you will definitely use them. I can't imagine what is coming for Saturday and Sunday.

I'll send tomorrow the dances filling the floor because I've been writing them down but did I bring the list down with me this morning? Nooooooooooooooooooooo. I had breakfast this morning with my British friends and Dan and I ate grits together -- he even wanted a second helping!!! I knew I liked that boy. I just love grits!!

I'm just taking a quick break before taking HUSH HUSH from Dee. I was going to take Shaz's BEAUTIFUL but you couldn't even get in the room. I'm also taking Max Perry's AIN'T TOO PROUD OF CHA CHA. I am taking Neil's I'M YOURS. I think this dance has the chance to be a huge hit because the music is really cute and the dance is easier and doable and every age and level will like it. For sure am taking Scott's COOCHIE BANG BANG and running from that class right to the cookie party and then -- and then I forgot what else.

I heard that Kathy Hunyadi's dance called SAN FRANCISCO CHA was full and who doesn't love that long, about If you're going to San Francisco? I remember when that song first came out, Bucky and I were driving to San Francisco and were in Haight Ashbury at the height of the hippy movement. I couldn't take that class because the song makes me cry but I hope it's a big hit for Kathy. Diane Poole is sitting here with me and she liked BEAUTIFUL, SAMBALERA, SO PERSUASIVE, FAIRYTALE, I'M YOURS, COOCHIE BANG BANG and LOVE SONG but that's not all. She had to leave and couldn't finish telling me her list. I also liked Junior's HOW DO YOU SLEEP, Steve Lescarbeau's HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID, Rob Glover's SAMALERA, Will Craig's LOVE SONG, Dan Albro's DANCE OFF MY BLUES -- sexy little number to Delbert-type music -- might even be Delbert. Daniel Trepat's RESPECT, Junior's INVISIBLE. People are standing around and here's their picks. ALL SUMMER LONG, Daniel Trepat, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID, IN CONTROL, LIFE WITHOUT YOU, MOJO RHYTHM. I'll finish my survey and send you some more picks later.

I wanted to tell Kathy Brown thanks so much for babysitting Lola for me and Candy for checking on Lucy. Kathy was supposed to come and teach but got laid off from her job so decided she better stay home and find a job so if you know of one tell her about it. She lives in the Tampa area. I talk to so many people who have lost jobs so if you know of any in your company, let me know and I'll post it in a little "jobs" section of the newsletter. Anyway, Kathy is being kind enough to send this out to everyone so a great big THANK YOU!! I'll check in for tomorrow. Give Lola a kiss for me. I MISS HER!!!

SATURDAY FROM ME

We stayed up until around two last night but many people stayed up much later. Demos are first thing in the morning and I wanted to be up for those and once again, there were WAY too many good classes to take them all. I've been going to the Marathon for many years and I can honestly say this is the year that has the most best dances hour after hour. Everyone is saying they just don't know what class to take next. I really suggest you get the videos from this event or at least find all the step sheets and give the dances a look. It's pretty amazing. Stacy will be posting the entire schedule when we get back so you can see everything that was taught. This morning I took Daniel Trepat's Travelin' (a very cute Elvis-type dance) with great music and easy enough for any class to do but with lots of attitude. He also taught another one called Funky ??. I'll have to get the name for you but it was also easy and cute and he had an enthusiastic class. What a wonderful addition he has been to the Marathon this year. Can't wait to see him perform in the show. I also took Niels Poulsen's CUBAN KISS. Loved, loved, loved this dance to great Latin music. I talked with someone who took Ruben Luna's class, IF I COULD CHANGE and they were raving about it. I'll be asking others about the classes they took so I can give you a report on some of the classes there was just no way I couldtake. It's only early afternoon so others classes are to come. I needed a break but all my friends are in taking Scott's Food Chain. I want to do Roomba and Broken Glass so decided to take a little break or I won't remember any of them. I also would like to learn EASE ON DOWN by JP Potter and Rachael. Looks easy but cute. Maurice Rowe is going to be teaching GOTTA GET THAT this afternoon and I plan to take that class and at the same time is Daniel Trepat's I GOT THE BLUES, which I also want to take. I'm also taking Shaz Walton's MAGIC which looks excellent and I love the music. At the ame time Max is teaching one of the my all-time favorites TEXAS. What a treat to bring this one back. Guyton is also doing ANGELS ON THE MOON but I am going to wait until the Florida Fun In The Sun to do that one of Guyton's and also learn FOOD CHAIN. There were a lot of good dances like Johnny Two-Step's new waltz, HAVE THIS DANCE. Very interesting dance. I thought Dee Musk's COME TO ME has all the making of a classic dance that everyone will be doing soon. Every dance I've seen of Junior's this weekend has been just great. I want to learn all of the ones he's teaching. Will Craig is another one that has at least three really excellent dances. I think he's going to enter the choreography competition and from the people I know competing I'm glad I'm not judging. Watch for the results of that because I can guarantee you they will all be good ones. Dan Albro brought some great country ones and he and his kids are even the musicians for some of the music. How cool is that!!! Michael Barr taught Fiona and two people just told me they loved it. Just got another report about Bracken Ellis' SWEET AND TENDER AND SOUL MUSIC. They liked both of them. See what I mean? Too many good dances, too little time!! Oh, another tip, RESPECT, by Daniel Trepat.

Everyone is just having a great time. The hotel staff is the best, as they always are. I think they keep their staff forever. They even know some of our names. Last night we had the Cookie Party and the welcoming party and both were just great. Thanks, Michael Barr, for sharing a little of what you discussed in his teacher's seminar yesterday. I will also be adding the information that I handed out when I get back and I think you'll find it very informative. The cookies were WONDERFUL!!! I don't know who made them but I want them to come home with me. LOL. Wait until the see the pictures of Jean. She just look terrific and I made sure to take lots of pictures and not only Jean but wait until you see Scott Blevins. He looks amazing. He has lost a bunch of weight and is running every day and he's moving around like the Scott I saw a few years ago. He's just energized and on a roll. Lou Ann Schemmel is another one who looks great. Now I'm motivated to go home and get back on my DIET!!! LOL.

Looking forward to the show and parade tonight and a late late night of dancing. I probably won't write again until I get home but hope this gives you a little snapshot of the wonderful time we are having. Wish you were all here and get our those dancing shoes because you have some wonderful dances to learn AND one of the best things about the dances is that there are ALL LEVELS. I would say the super hard ones and super long ones are in the minority but all of the dances are interesting and fun to do rather than just a lot of work. I think all of us are just wanted to enjoy the dances more and work a little less and I think you're going to be very happy to see that many, many of the dances fit that description just perfectly. The music choices are really good and the run the gamut from country to you name it.

Thanks, again, Kathy Brown, for keeping everyone posted a little at a time. I'll write again after I get home.

Desert Dance 2009

We had a great time in our home from home in the desert – This time the highlight for myself, Dee & Shaz was a fun ‘Desert Dance’ weekend organised by our good friends from AZ, Carolyn, Janet & Carol – It was a bit different from your regular event because it was workshop days in a lovely community hall at Tucson Estates – With the Out-of-State guys staying in a nearby hotel (Thanks very much for coming everyone) - And special thanks to Christopher Petre for joining us too for the weekend - We had a blast.

Thanks from us all to everyone who made our stay in the States at Durham & Tucson such a great one – To Jean & Carolyn for inviting us to their events - To Christopher for joining us in Tucson - And to Scott/Deanna for welcoming us at the Cactus Moon …................

We did a bunch of teaching at 'Desert Dance' – Dances of all styles/levels – Great dances from Dee, Shaz & Christopher – Dances of their own plus more hits, including some other hits from the Marathon & recent releases from back home in the UK ……….. ............Some fun times too in Tucson ………

On Friday/Saturday we danced 11am – 9pm pretty much not stop & them went out to party together & dance some more – On Friday it was a country lounge called the C-Note, with great live country music – And space for us to dance too a bit – And on Saturday Brat’s Bar, who let me DJ in their dance room for the evening - That was cool - Both involving Wings & Miller too of course !! :-) – After two days of a great informal mix of workshops & social dancing, Sunday was a dedicated Advanced Newline Workshop from 10pm-2.00pm, featuring Shaz’s Beautiful/Magic & Dee’s Take Me Back/Hush Hush .... And started with a teach from Christopher of Rona's cool funky one Ol' Skool Company.

On Thursday most folk were in town too for a pre-event night at Tucson’s Cactus Moon Country Club, where Dee, Shaz & Christopher each taught a dance at Scott/Deanna’s regular Thursday class (Release Me, Hit The Ground & Drop Your Socks)  – Thanks for a great welcome & an awesome fun night from all at the Moon – It was a great start to the weekend – And we followed it with a ‘welcome’ BBQ party at our favourite bar Nevada Smith’s Saloon – We played a fun team game guessing the names of bits of dances ‘performed’ by Christopher/Shaz/Dee – A fun game cribbed from Niels’s Danish Newliners called ‘The Airport Game’ (Because they first did it hanging around waiting for a plane !! J)

We finished on a high when I bunch of us went for an evening in Tombstone – The Wild West – Well it was when we got there to party !! J It was a blast & a great finish to a memorable weekend – After an awesome time the JG Marathon the weekend before & then back home, we are now back for a rest !! J

Pauline & I are looking forward to seeing everyone next in the States at Tampa in November with MaggieG.

Caught up with Robbie's easy two-step Go Mama Go this week - And the bonus from Holland was his cool new one Scoobie Doo - A 'Moonlight Kiss' sort of beat - Everyone also enjoying Roomba, Ease On Down & Release Me too.

New intermediate dances were MaggieG's Azer-Bai-Jan & Niels's Cuban Kiss, both well received - Others going well include my current favourite Jesse James - Also Coochie Bang Bang, Under A Spell & Maybe.
